Top Texas city for LGBT folks? Austin, according to report

With four major pride festivals this September alone, rainbow crosswalks planned for the Warehouse District and high ranks in the past two U.S. census surveys for the concentration of same-sex couples, Austin is home to an undeniably visible LGBT community. According to a recently released report by the Human Rights Campaign, the city’s policies and services nurture that community better than any place in Texas, as well.

The 2014 Municipal Equality Index, which the rights group says “demonstrates the ways that many cities can—and do— support the LGBT people who live and work there,” gives Austin the highest score of any major city in the state. In fact, the capital received the highest final score possible — 100 — though the points accrued exceeded that total. Austin received a score of 100 in 2013, too.
