CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is going hard after re-election challenger Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia’s record and platform in the first head-to-head televised debate before next month’s runoff election.

The tone of Monday’s televised debate was snappy with the former White House chief of staff questioning Garcia’s budget proposal and its call for spending audits.

Emanuel says he offers specifics, while Garcia wants to study the issues.

But Garcia says Emanuel only focuses on improving downtown, not neighborhoods. Garcia is a former alderman and legislator.

The two are in an April 7 runoff after Emanuel failed to capture the majority needed to win a second term in February.

Debate topics also included crime, Chicago’s red-light cameras and taxes. It was hosted by Chicago’s WMAQ-TV, Telemundo and the University of Chicago.
